On the evening of October 4, visitors to Lego’s website were greeted by a banner featuring illustrated golden coins with the company’s logo, announcing the official release of the “Lego coin” and promising “secret rewards” for buyers. However, this was not the launch of an official cryptocurrency by Lego, as revealed by The Brick Fan, who discovered that the buy button led to an external cryptocurrency website selling “LEGO Tokens” with Ethereum, indicating the website had been hijacked by malicious individuals for a crypto scam. Despite the incident occurring overnight at Lego’s headquarters, the company swiftly responded by removing the unauthorized banner and links. Currently, the Lego Fortnite collaboration banner is back up with the appropriate link, with assurances from Lego that no user accounts were compromised. The company has identified the cause of the issue and is implementing preventative measures for the future, although specifics were not shared. In an official statement, Lego confirmed the unauthorized banner incident and reiterated that user accounts were secure, and measures were being taken to avoid a repeat occurrence.
