At Meta’s Connect event, the biggest reveal was its long-promised AR glasses, Orion, priced at around $10,000 each and not ready for public release yet. Additionally, Meta introduced holographic avatars, called Codec Avatars, allowing users to interact with lifelike holograms in augmented reality. Mark Zuckerberg previously teased this technology in a podcast interview. Meta’s VP, Mark Rabkin, discussed how Codec Avatars will eventually be integrated into VR headsets like Quest, making avatar creation simpler and more accessible. He envisions these avatars being playable on future VR headsets, but notes that current models lack the required sensors for photorealistic avatars. However, Rabkin believes the next generation of VR headsets could support this technology, making it more widely available.
