Microsoft is in the process of finalizing a deal that would resurrect the infamous Three Mile Island nuclear power plant, as reported by The Washington Post. This Pennsylvania plant, known for a partial reactor meltdown in 1979, will become Microsoft’s sole customer for 20 years, providing energy exclusively for the tech giant’s AI needs. The revival of Three Mile Island is aimed at helping Microsoft meet its commitment to power AI development with carbon-free electricity. If approved, this unprecedented deal will see the plant operate exclusively for one client for the first time and become the first decommissioned power plant to come back online. Constellation, the plant’s owner, stands to profit significantly from this arrangement, with projections suggesting billions in earnings over the contract period. While regulatory approvals and safety inspections are still pending, the potential economic benefits and job opportunities for the local community are highlighted as positive outcomes. Ultimately, the move reflects the growing demand for energy-intensive AI technologies and the unique solutions being explored to meet this demand sustainably.
