A bipartisan group of Senators, including Chris Coons, Marsha Blackburn, Amy Klobuchar, and Thom Tillis, introduced the NO FAKES Act, which aims to outlaw the creation of digital replications of a person’s voice or likeness without their consent. If passed, this legislation would allow individuals to seek damages for unauthorized AI-generated replicas of their voice, face, or body. Instances of celebrities falling victim to deepfake scams have already been reported, highlighting the need for this kind of protection. Senator Coons emphasized the importance of safeguarding everyone’s right to control their own voice and image, regardless of their status. The proposed act has garnered support from various entertainment organizations and even OpenAI, showing a united effort to tackle the exploitation of AI technology. This legislation, along with the recent DEFIANCE Act, demonstrates lawmakers’ commitment to regulating AI and protecting individuals from deepfake abuses.
