The Wall Street Journal reported that the New York Times sent a cease and desist letter to Perplexity, an AI startup funded by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, for using the Times’ content without permission. The letter claims that Perplexity’s use of the Times’ content to generate answers and summaries with its AI portal violates copyright law and demands a response by October 30. Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas stated that they are interested in working with all publishers, including the New York Times. This is not the first time the New York Times has taken legal action against AI companies, as they previously sued OpenAI and Microsoft for allegedly using their content to train AI models. Amazon Web Services also launched an investigation into Perplexity for allegedly scraping websites without consent.
